First of all, I'd have to say that the marketing for this film was all wrong. The trailers depict this film as a Superbad-esque type of film, which to be quite honest, is very far from it. This movie is not an hour and a half of hilarity, sexually crude humor, or constant slapsticks( although it's not entirely void of those qualities.) This is more of a coming-of-age film(despite the main cast being in their early twenties), which occasional moments of over the top comical scenes and subtle humor in the dialogue.
Now, if one were to see this movie with a mindset of it being a Superbad 2, then they'd probably be quite disappointed. On the other hand, if you go in expecting nothing more than an enjoyable movie, then you'd be quite satisfied. I, for one, enjoyed the movie very, very much.
Here's the story, James(played very naturally by Jesse Eisenberg) is a college graduate who needs a job to save up for school in New York (hmm, semi relatable-ish). So he gets a summer job at the only place he can, which is at Adventureland. Well, it's obviously not the greatest job for someone his age or for anyone not in high school either.( more relatable-ish) He goes in thinking it'll be hell, which it was. But he experiences some of the best times of his youthful life and meets some of the greatest people working at this craphole; particularly a girl named Em(played oh so hotly by Kristen Stewart. seriously, she was super hot in this movie. I think it was the careless hair + the i-don'tgive-afuck attitude= win!) Anyway, there's this whole love triangle that happens and other shit that life throws at you. Ultimately, it's a film about working at shitty places, smoking joints, eating pot cookies, and dorky kids making out with hot chicks( now that's a movie!) But on a more serious note, it really is a coming-of-age film that deals with the issues any young man faces in his life and how eventually learns and grows from it.
I really, thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I know some who don't. I've heard some hated it, labeling it "sucky." I don't give a shit. I like these type of movies. Like I said before, I'm a sucker for romances and the Em + James scenes were probably some of my favorites. Once scene in particular, which was probably my favorite, was the bumper cars scene. It was shot so beautifully and of course, backed with fantastic music; very much like the other scenes in this film.
why I loved it:
- great, simple, relatable plot
- good acting
- GREAT music
- set in 1987
- funny
- Kristen Stewart's sexiness
- coming of age flick
movie brilliance: 8.5/10
It's not quite a 9. but I want to give it a 9. but it's not quite a 9. but i still really liked it.
