Dancer in the Dark. An incredibly emotional film with a plethora of tear-jerking scenes. There were so many moments in the film that left me feeling heartbroken but for some strange reason, I didn't shed a tear, which sucked 'cause I really wanted to cry, but I just couldn't. I think Slumdog did something to me. I've fallen in love with Björk in this movie; she proves that not only is she an incredible singer but a phenomenal actress as well.
Basically, the story is about a foreign woman who saves up money in order to afford an operation that will prevent her son from a disease that she suffers from as well; going blind. Being that Selma, Björk, is an avid musical fan, the movie has several musical scenes where the characters burst out into song. While I personally think that the movie would have been better if the musical scenes were omitted, some of them were the most beautiful parts in the movie. Behold:
The visuals itself are stunning, but being accompanied by an immensely heartfelt and haunting song makes it one of the most emotionally moving scenes in movie history; it's definitely my favorite part of the movie. Additionaly, just the context of this scene is very touching; a woman going blind and telling herself "I've seen it all."
why i love it:
- very moving
- stunning visuals
- beautiful score
- creative directing
- amazing acting
- "I've seen it all" scene
- Björk
I got a little frustrated at her character sometimes and also it was a little too sad for my taste, but nevertheless it was beautifully directed and had an equally beautiful score.
Movie brilliance: 8.5/10
off topic: ( it seems to me, that everyday is movie monday. oh well. but today is special because its Martin Luther King Jr. Day)
My pulse was as high on my very first date.
